To Become Unstuck – Just Start
It’s so easy to quit
Sometimes when stuck, in order to write again and defeat resistance, I start by lightly banging the keyboard with my fingertips, as if my creativity is a motor which has sat idle too long. I perform this arduous task without hope of victory — a doomed operation — because I know from experience that the starting action is the only way to become unstuck. Stay on the task, otherwise lose momentum. This process has helped me write two books and over two hundred blog posts in the last four years. By doing what needs to be done, even when I don’t feel like it, or know what to do next.
When I was learning the fundamentals of pickup I had no idea what to say, or do. Because my friends did not see the same value as I did in seduction, I had no wingmen to go out with. So I went out alone, because placing myself in the environment would enable a start. I did not focus on what to say, or what to think. I focused on the ritual of reading seduction literature for thirty minutes, taking a shower, eating a small meal, putting on my shoes and walking to the nearest bar. Once I was in the bar I would eventually approach a girl and usually embarrass myself, which was fine. That’s how I learned.
Last week, on my way past the gym, after four months of slacking, I walked in, handed them my bank card and asked for a month pass. I then entered the gym, still in my jeans and street shoes, sat at a machine and started pushing weights. I’ve been at the gym on and off over the last five years. Sometimes I have to travel, or I run low on money, so I stop going to the gym. This is almost always disastrous to my game. Not because I lose my jacked physique, but because I am .00005 less confident.
Showing up isn’t half the battle — it is the battle. Form the habit of showing up. Every time you do, and you put in just a little work, you will be a fraction of a percent closer to realizing your goal. Get on that damn Unicorn, hold onto its godly antennae and ride the fucker to your dreams. Do not let go. And if you do, take a breath, reflect on your failure and then start again. It’s doubtful you will be able to stay on mission forever without falling but when you do, even if years pass by, just start again. That’s how success works. Via a series of false starts and getting back on the task of becoming a great man.
Maybe you’ve started something great, and then quit. Or you had a brilliant idea for a new project; you wrote notes, studied the masters, started the path of glory and realized it’s really hard, so your motivation waned, you puttered, lost momentum and quit. Shame. Defeat.
Start again
Today. Now. After you finish reading this article. do one thing to improve your life, even if that’s reading a book to improve your intellect, cleaning your room, calling that girl you’ve been afraid to call, doing your taxes, taking a jog around the block. Do one thing. Just start.
You can be born rich, or good looking, or healthy. But you can’t be born with noble character. To create your own success, it’s a matter of starting and stopping until you have the momentum to keep on going. Eventually you will complete your task, and reap the rewards of your focus, ambition and drive. You have to believe this to be so. The Universe will not give you what you want, only what you believe you already have. This is why you must be doing what needs to be done, right now. So start again. Just start.
